PAUHauto: Bentley 4x4

The new Bentley 4x4 will out-punch a Porsche Cayenne, be more luxurious than a Range Rover and “mark a new pinnacle of SUVs in several dimensions”, according to Bentley chairman and CEO Wolfgang Durheimer.

As well as a new Bentley-developed version of the W12 engine – expected to produce around 600bhp and feature eco technology such as cylinder deactivation – the new car will eventually feature a V8 diesel model and a plug-in hybrid with a six-cylinder engine. Bentley will also plunder the rest of the VW Group’s technology in the search for weight-saving innovations.

Bentley’s 4x4 sits somewhere between the Porsche Cayenne and Range Rover in terms of size, dynamics and ride comfort, and is set to out-perform both. The only fly in the ointment comes from in-house rival Lamborghini, which is also planning a high-performance SUV, possibly using a version of Bentley’s W12.

However, the Bentley will bring a new level of luxury and price (around £140,000) to the class. Bentley will rely on its craftsmen to produce the most sumptuous 4x4 cabin using the very finest materials and including some neat touches from design chief Dirk van Braeckel and his team.

The concept features what van Braeckel describes as “a more modern, advanced interior, but with the usual quality of wood and leather”. However, Bentley is using harder saddle leather for the first time in areas that may be subject to harder wear – this is a 4x4 after all – with softer leather where customers are more likely to touch it.

The traditional, full-width burr walnut dash complete with bullseye vents is juxtaposed with a hi-tech infotainment screen that will emerge from the dash and seem to float above a panel with controls for the climate, navigation and entertainment systems. Full connectivity and Internet access with downloadable apps will keep the system up-to-date.

The instrument binnacle features digital TFT screens with analogue needles. The displays change depending on the driving mode and also show the view of exterior cameras. Major controls are larger than usual so the driver can use them with gloves on.

A full-length panoramic sunroof has a central metal bar running its full length and featuring grab handles.

Bentley has lavished as much attention on the rear quarters as anywhere else in the car. The boot features a powered, split tailgate, beautifully trimmed for two people to sit or stand on. Two hampers swing out from panels above the wheelarches to boost the car’s picnic appeal.

The Bentley is taller and wider than a Cayenne, but lower and narrower than a Range Rover. It’s longer than both, with a longer wheelbase, too.

Outside, a wide matrix mesh grille is flanked by large Mulsanne-style circular lights. Under the headlamps sit similarly-sized circular air intakes, surrounded by LED daytime running lights.

The traditional Bentley ‘catwalk’ bonnet crease runs from the outside of the grille to the edges of the wide, upright windscreen. Further styling lines are fed from the headlights, wrapping around the side of the car with side vents inspired by the Bentley flying B.

Muscular Continental GT-style rear haunches are nicely integrated into the sides, but an inelegant roof spoiler is necessary to boost downforce at high speed.

The square rear lights look clunky until they’re switched on when they resemble a fighter jet’s afterburner. Chunky twin exhausts are integrated into metal under the bumper, which also features at the front and sides of the car.

The 23-inch turbine-style alloys with 800mm diameter tyres are clearly performance orientated, while there will be a sporty feel to the steering: “effortless driving, but not effortless steering,” according to Bentley engineering chief Rolf Frech. Yet the car will still be a proper off-roader, with Frech adding: “We have to show we can be good off road. If we build an SUV, it’ll be a real SUV, not a fake.”

PAUHauto: Mini ClubVAN?

MINI looks set to expand into the burgeoning commercial vehicle market with a new cargo hauler, following the reveal of its latest concept car.

Called the Clubvan, MINI’s new concept for the upcoming 2012 Geneva Motor Show is what you get when you take an ordinary Clubman, black out the rear windows and remove the rear seats.

MINI describes it as a compact lifestyle van for business or leisure, and you can certainly imagine small scale delivery services such as florists or pizza businesses using the cute vehicles as a promotional tool.

In total there are two seats, five doors, and a practical load area that reaches from the split rear doors right up to the partition grille behind the two seats. The totally level floor makes full use of the interior’s depth, and that allows the concept to offer more storage space than the Clubman on which it’s based.

MINI will be using the Clubvan’s Geneva appearance to gauge public interest in the vehicle, and if the production green light is given then we wouldn’t be surprised if an all-electric version is launched further down the track to lure small businesses looking to curb ever-increasing gas bills.

Note, the Clubvan is just one additional model MINI is considering. As we reported just last week, three new all-new MINIs are due by the end of the decade, potentially including, in addition to this van variant, a station wagon and sedan.

PAUHauto: Ferrari F12 Berlinetta

This is the new 2012 Ferrari F12 Berlinetta - the most powerful road car ever to wear the prancing horse badge, thanks to a 545kW, 6.3-litre V12 engine.

Making its debut at next week's Geneva motor show, the front-engined, rear-drive two-seater has a striking aluminium body that mixes cues from the current 599 with a grille and headlight combination inspired by the FF.

It's more compact than its predecessor, at 4.62m long. That means it is 47mm shorter than before, as well as being 20mm narrower and 63mm lower. Thanks to an all-new aluminium spaceframe chassis, it also weighs 70kg less, tipping the scales at just 1525kg in dry trim.

Expertise gained from Formula One and the 599 XX has been applied to the body, too. The sweep running from the top of the wing is not just for show. Called the Aero Bridge, it channels air away from the bonnet to reduce drag.

In addition, the F12's Active Brake Cooling system uses flaps in the front wing edges which open at speed to cool the carbon-ceramic brake discs.

At the top of the rear wing is a vent. Although it hasn't been confirmed, it is thought that a fan is located in the rear wing, which draws air through the vent to the rear, creating an F1-style blown diffuser.

All these tweaks reduce the aero Cd drag coefficient to just 0.299, while the shape produces real downforce - 123kg at 200km/h, up 76 per cent on the 599 GTB.

Together with a lower overall weight and extra power, the F12 Berlinetta is enormously fast. As well as producing 545kW at 8500rpm - up 88kW on the 599 GTB - it has 690Nm of torque, an increase of 83Nm, which Ferrari claims is available from 2500rpm through to the 8700rpm redline.

Hooked up to a development of the seven-speed twin-clutch gearbox in the FF and California, with shortened ratios, the F12 Berlinetta does 0-100km/h in 3.1 seconds, with a top speed of 340km/h. It can also accelerate from 0-200km/h in just 8.5 seconds.

With lower weight, better aerodynamics and stop-start, it's also more efficient than the old 599 GTB, claiming 15 litres/100km, up from 17.8 litres/100km, with CO2 emissions of 350g/km, down from 415g/km.

Standard equipment includes the latest evolution of Ferrari's magnetic damping system, along with an electronic differential. As a result of the lighter weight and increased power, Ferrari says the F12 Berlinetta can lap the Fiorano circuit in just one minute 23 seconds, making it faster than any other Ferrari road car.

The cabin is inspired by the FF. Ferrari says it incorporates all-new leather, plus new carbon fibre and aluminium air vents. Most of the car's controls are located on the steering wheel. It should be reasonably practical, too, with a hatchback tailgate and space behind the rear seats for luggage.
